Kiara & Michael - Edinburgh City Chambers Elopement

bride sitting next to the piano in her air BnB - Edinburgh elopement photographer

Back in February I had the privilege of photographing this Fijian couple’s city elopement. Michael is serving in the military here in Edinburgh, and Kiara moved over from Fiji so they could be together. Since the Scottish climate is a wee bit cooler than what they are used to, the couple opted to rent an Air BnB to take photos in their wedding outfits the day prior to the official ceremony in the City Chambers. As an Edinburgh wedding photographer, I knew that the space needed to be bright with lots of window light to produce the best results. Therefore, I gave them some pointers at what to look for. Michael and Kiara found this wonderful little gem in York Place, complete with a piano and a chandelier. I was really happy when I saw it!

Their wedding photoshoot in the Air BnB had some beautifully unique elements. Instead of a bouquet, Kiara chose a traditional Fijian wedding fan called iri which normally has the couple’s last name woven into it. It was so beautiful and original! As a Scotland elopement photographer I always appreciate when my couples add unique personal touches to their weddings.

Another beautiful tradition that Michael and Kiara chose to embrace was the custom where the newlyweds wash each other’s feet before/after the wedding ceremony. This custom imitates what Jesus did to his disciples before the Last Supper. He washed each of the twelve disciples feet before he was to die for them, showing them that true love always involves self-giving and sacrifice.

The next day I met up with Kiara & Michael to attend their legal wedding ceremony at Edinburgh City Chambers. I also had the honour to be their witness (which is something I am always happy to do for you!). After a short and lovely ceremony we headed out into some of the most iconic spots in Edinburgh Old Town. We visited a couple of my favourite locations around the Royal Mile - Makar’s Court and Victoria Street. It was such a lovely way to end this two-day elopement.
